  5.     Rasczak moves off down the line giving orders.
  6.

  8.         Corporal, I want pulse cannons there
  9.         and there ! Rifle teams, spread out
  10.         along the ridge ! Sugar, bring up that
  11.         flame thrower !
  12.  
  13.                 GILLESPIE
  14.         Fleet's pulling the battle group back
  15.         to safe distance... They'd like us to
  16.         knock out those batteries, sir.
  17.  
  18.                 RASCZAK
  19.         They'd rather spend our lives than
  20.         risk their ships. Who's got the nuke ?
  21.  
  22.                 DIZZY
  23.         That'd be me, sir.
  24.  
  25.                 RASCZAK
  26.         Heat it up.
  27.  
  28.     Dizzy activates a tactical nuke. It makes a distinctive HIGHPITCHED SQUEAL.

  30.                 RASCZAK
  31.         Roughnecks, you may fire at will.
  32.  
  33.     The Roughnecks open fire. Bugs are blown to pieces but they keep climbing. A 
  34.     warrior breeches their line. Sugar Watkins torches it. The nuke's ready light flashes.
  35.  
  36.                 DIZZY
  37.         I'm hot, sir !
  38.  
  39.                 RASCZAK
  40.         FIRE ! BLAST SHIELDS DOWN !
  41.  
  42.     Johnny blows a warrior away from the edge. Dizzy leans over and fires. The rocket 
  43.     streaks down toward the battery.
  44.  
  45.                 RASCZAK
  46.         HIT THE DIRT !
  47.  
  48.     An explosion in the two kiloton range turns the world black and white. When color
  49.     returns Johnny and the others look down on the smoldering crater which was once the 
  50.     bug battery.

  52.                 GILLESPIE
  53.         Now comes the part I hate the most.

  55.                 JOHNNY
  56.         What's that ?
  57.  
  58.                 GILLESPIE
  59.         We go down into the colony and make
  60.         sure all the queens are dead.

  62. 127    INT    TUNNELS - DAY - THE ROUGHNECKS

  64.     fight their way down gassed-out tunnels into bug city. They meet warrors at
  65.     every turn and kill them. Helmet lamps make weird shadows of dead bugs 
  66.     piled everywhere along the way.
  67.  
  68.                 SUGAR WATKINS
  69.         You knew the Lieutenant before the war...
  70.         What was he like ?
  71.  
  72.                 JOHNNY
  73.         He was a teacher , kind of a know it all...
  74.         Always had this little smile.

  77.         Geez, I don't think I've ever seen him

  82.         when your wife and kids get smeared.

  84.     Johnny joins Rasczak, Ace and Dizzy and they blow away several warriors
  85.     guarding the entrance of a large chamber.

  87. 128    INT    BUG NURSERY - DAY - THE QUEENS
  88.  
  89.     are eight meters long with corpulent bodies and tiny heads. Only one survives,
  90.     and though she is herself dying, her abdomen, rippled by life within, continues to
  91.     undulate.
  92.  
  93.                 JOHNNY
  94.         All dead except one, sir.
  95.  
  96.                 RASCZAK
  97.         Kill the bitch.
  98.  
  99.                 JOHNNY
  100.         Yes, sir.
  101.  
  102.     Johnny signals. Dizzy's pulse cannon rips open the dying queen. Thousands of
  103.     wriggling premature bugs come spilling out. Horrified, knee-deep Roughnecks
  104.     set them afire.
  105.  
  106. 129    EXT    TANGO URILLA - BASE CAMP - DAY - FLEET ENGINEERS
  107.  
  108.     unload PRE-FAB BARRACKS from HERCULES CARGO BOATS. 
  109.     Roughnecks eat. Rasczak stands, banging a spoon on his mess kit.
  110.  
  111.                 RASCZAK
  112.         Tango Urilla is now bug free. Means
  113.         the Roughnecks have killed  a
  114.         helluva lotta bugs...!
  115.  
  116.     Roughnecks cheer. Rasczak kicks open a CARGO MODULE. Beer kegs
  117.     rool out. He kicks open a second module. Inside, musical instruments.
  118.     Ace picks up a violin.
  119.  
  120.                 RASCZAK
  121.         I expect the best, but I give the best.
  122.         Habve some fun. That's an order !
  123.  
  124. 130    EXT    BASE CAMP - NIGHT - LATER - ACE

  126.     leads a little quartet, plays a sweet fiddle. Roughnecks laugh and dance.
  127.     Dizzy tries to pull Johnny into the fun.

  175.     He pulls her out among the others and they begin to dance. Ace watches
  176.     with a grin, puts some spirit in his fiddle.

  183.         At 0821 we received a distress call from 
  184.         Planet P, priority code, requesting
  185.         reinforcement...

  188.         I thought 4th brigade cleaned out P. 
  189.  
  190.                 INTELLIGENCE OFFICER
  191.         Owen reported the eradication of a low
  192.         generation colony a month ago. That's why 
  193.         MICOM wants onsite assessment.
  194.  
  195.                 RASCZAK
  196.         Sounds more like some idiot at
  197.         Military Intelligence Command
  198.         wants to get me and my cap troopers 
  199.         killed...
  200.  
  201.     The Intelligence Officer reddens.

  204.         Take your group down to P and have a 
  205.         look see. Leave the thinking to us,
  206.         Lieutenant. That's not your job.

  210.         soldiers so they can kill bugs, Major,
  211.         and if you're walking me into a trap-

  214.         Bugs don't lay traps... They aren't
  215.         intelligent ! Unlike you, they're stupid
  216.         enough to follow orders !

  221.     The Intelligence Officer disappears abruptly. A new hologram appears.
  222.     Rasczak's jaw drops. It's his former student Carl Jenkins, now a Colonel,
  223.     weary and pissed off.

  226.         This conference is over. Do your duty,
  227.         Lieutenant. That's an order.
  228.  
  229.     Rasczak recovers, salutes stiffly.

  232.         Yes, sir.

  234. 132    INT    PRE-FAB SLEEPING UNIT - DAY - JOHNNY AND DIZZY

  236.     are making love. The door pops open. Rasczak stands there. Dizzy ducks under
  237.     the covers. Johnny manages a salute.

  240.         Corporal, the Roughnecks are moving
  241.         out for Planet P immediately. Get
  242.         yourself squared away and report to
  243.         Gillespie for logistics.
  244.  
  245.                 JOHNNY
  246.         Yes, sir !

  249.         Who's that with you ?
  250.  
  251.     Dizzy shows herself, grinning.

  254.         Report in ten minutes.

  256.     Rasczak slams the door shut on them. They fall back into one anothers arms,
  257.     laughing as they resume lovemaking.

  260.         Planet P ? What kind of name is that ?

  263.         They ran out of names a long time
  264.         ago in this part of the galaxy.

  268.     move through canyons of towering wind-carved rock formations.
  269.     Gillespie carries the communications package.

  272.         I don't understand it, Lieutenant.
  273.         It's not getting anything from 4th
  274.         Brigade...
  275.         not even their transponder.

  278.         Keep trying, Sergeant.

  280. 134    EXT    CANYON FLOOR - CONTINUING - DAY - THE ROUGHNECKS

  282.     walk in a column far below. Something is watching from the above... HOPPERS,
  283.     lots of them, moving from rock to rock for better position.
  284.  
  285. 135    EXT    CANYON FLOOR - CONTINUING - DAY - ACE
  286.     
  287.     sees something out of the corner of his eye.
  288.  
  289.                 JOHNNY
  290.         BUGS...!
  291.  
  292.     The hoppers hit. Several Roughnecks go down. Everyone opens up. 
  293.     Dive-bombing bugs are blown to bits. Roughnecks set them on fire 
  294.     when they hit the ground.
  295.  
  296.                 DIZZY
  297.         Johnny, watch out !
  298.  
  299.     A burning bug hurls itself at Johnny. Johnny jumps out of the way as
  300.     Dizzy fires, blowing it apart. The deadly hoppers seem to be everywhere
  301.     above them in the rocks.
  302.  
  303.                 RASCZAK
  304.         LET'S GO ! ON THE BOUNCE !
  305.  
  306. 136    EXT    FLAT LANDS - DAY - THE ROUGHNECKS
  307.  
  308.     move out into the open. In the distance they see 4th Brigade HQ, a walled 
  309.     compound and partially constructed landing pad.
  310.  
  311.                 RASCZAK
  312.         Gillespie, put in call for retrieval.
  313.         We're off this rock.
  314.         Gillespie, do you read me ?
  315.  
  316.                 GILLESPIE
  317.         AAAAAAAAAAA !
  318.  
  319.     Two hoppers are pulling Gillespie up into the rocks where other bugs
  320.     join to feast.
  321.  
  322.                 RASCZAK
  323.         Throw a rifle !
  324.  
  325.     Dizzy tosses her Morita to Rasczak. Gillespie writhes in the hopper's
  326.     claws. Rasczak fires, killing Gillespie.
  327.  
  328.                 RASCZAK
  329.         I expext any one here to do the same
  330.         for me... Rico, Watkins, Flores, Levy
  331.         prepare for rear guard action. The rest
  332.         of you make for 4th Brigade.
  333.  
  334.     Johnny and the others cover the Roughneck retreat as hoppers soar down
  335.     on the flat lands from the canyon walls.
  336.  
  337.                 RASCZAK
  338.         FIRE...!
  339.  
  340.     Johnny and the others blast bugs out of the air.
  341.  
  342.                 RASCZAK
  343.         FALL BACK 100 METERS...!
  344.  
  345.     A second wave of hoppers come in.
  346.  
  347.                 RASCZAK
  348.         AND FIRE...!
  349.  
  350.     For now, the sky is clear.

  353.         4TH BRIGADE HQ ! ON THE BOUNCE !

  355. 137    EXT    4TH BRIGADE HQ - DAY - THE OUTPOST
  356.  
  357.     is 50 meters by 100, standard issue pre-fab. The Roughnecks land on the
  358.     compound wall. Inside, WORKER BUGS graze on the remains of 200
  359.     dead cap troopers strewn over the complex.
  360.  
  361.                 RASCZAK
  362.         Jeez, Command really humped the bunk
  363.         on this one...
  364.  
  365.     Rasczak turns away. Roughnecks engage in the sport of methodically
  366.     killing the workers.
  367.  
  368.                 RASCZAK
  369.         Rico, you're acting Sergeant now.
  370.         My last Sergeant lost the com pack.
  371.         Put together a search team and find
  372.         the radio shack.
  373.         We need retrieval.
  374.  
  375.                 JOHNNY
  376.         Yes, sir.
  377.  
  378. 138    INT    4TH BRIGADE HQ - OFFICE COMPLEX - DAY - JOHNNY
  379.  
  380.     surveys the aftermath of the last stand with Rasczak, insect and human dead
  381.     everywhere.
  382.  
  383.                 DIZZY (O.S.)
  384.         It's here, sir.
  385.  
  386. 139    INT    COMMINICATIONS - DAY - RASCZAK AND JOHNNY
  387.  
  388.     enter the radio room. A DEAD MAJOR is slumped over the console with
  389.     hole in the back of his head. Johnny checks the equipment. 
  390.     It' dead, too.
  391.  
  392.                 JOHNNY
  393.         Diz, see what you can do.
  394.  
  395.                 DIZZY
  396.         I'm on it !
  397.  
  398.     Dizzy goes to work. Rasczak checks the wound in the back of the dead major's
  399.     head.
  400.  
  401.                 RASCZAK
  402.         What's that look like to you, Rico ?
  403.  
  404.                 JOHNNY
  405.         Looks like a bug was in his brain, sir.
  406.  
  407.                 ACE (O.S.)
  408.         Lieutenant, I think you're gonna
  409.         wanna see this, sir.
  410.  
  411. 140    INT    MESS HALL - DAY - A BUG HOLE
  412.  
  413.     in the middle of the floor is surrounded by carnage.
  414.  
  415.                 ACE
  416.         Dirty bugs came in right when they 
  417.         were having chow !
  418.  
  419.                 RASCZAK
  420.         Gas that hole and seal it.
  421.  
  422.     Then they hear a sound. Tap tap tap. Rasczak signals for quiet. Tap tap tap tap.
  423.     It's coming from the kitchen.
  424.  
  425. 141    INT    KITCHEN - DAY - THE ROUGHNECKS
  426.  
  427.     enter cautiously. The noise is coming from a freezer. Ace stands ready to fire.
  428.     Johnny levers open the door, jumps back as GENERAL OWEN, 60, tumbles out
  429.     face first.
  430.  
  431.                 ACE
  432.         Officer on the deck, sir.
  433.  
  434.                 RASCZAK
  435.         Pick up the general !
  436.  
  437.     Roughnecks prop him up. General Owen tries to talk, but no words come out.
  438.     Rasczak bends down to listen.
  439.  
  440.                 GENERAL OWEN
  441.         Get out... you gotta get me out...!
  442.  
  443.                 RASCZAK
  444.         General Owen, sir ?
  445.  
  446.     The old man grins, hugely relieved.
  447.  
  448.                 GENERAL OWEN
  449.         At ease, Lieutenant. Thank God for you,
  450.         for all of you...this is grand...
  451.         so where's the boat ?
  452.  
  453. 142    INT    COMMUNICATIONS - HALLWAY - DAY - JOHNNY AND RASCZAK
  454.  
  455.     help the old General, now wrapped in a blanket, rambling.
  456.  
  457.                 GENERAL OWEN
  458.         I was forced to hide, of course. The security
  459.         of the Federation in this theater of operations
  460.         was at stake !
  461.  
  462.                 JOHNNY
  463.         Diz, what's with the uplink ?
  464.  
  465.     Dizzy lokks up from where she is working on the radio controls.
  466.  
  467.                 DIZZY
  468.         Workin on it...!
  469.  
  470.                 GENERAL OWEN
  471.         They get in your mind... they make you do
  472.         things ! Look here... They did it to Farley...!
  473.  
  474.     He points at the hole of the dead major's head.
  475.  
  476.                 RASCZAK
  477.         The distress call... The bugs wanted us 
  478.         to rescue you...!
  479.  
  480.                 GENERAL OWEN
  481.         Oh, you can be sure of it ! They were
  482.         biding their time... waiting for the most
  483.         opportune moment !
  484.  
  485.     Rasczak's lost interest in the general. He's on the com.
  486.  
  487.                 RASCZAK
  488.         To all Roughnecks, this is Rasczak.
  489.         Prepare for attack. Repeat. We are
  490.         going to be attacked...!
  491.  
  492.                 GENERAL OWEN
  493.         They weren't gonna do it to me.
  494.         Oh no ! I know too many secrets !
  495.  
  496.     Rasczak looks at General Owen with contempt.
  497.  
  498.                 SUGAR WATKINS (O.S.)
  499.         Fire in the hole !
  500.  
  501.     An explosion in the mess hall closes the bug hole.

  503. 143    EXT    OFFICE COMPLEX - DAY - GENERAL OWEN
  504.  
  505.     blinks as he steps out into the light. Roughnecks snap to attention. 
  506.     General Owen looks at the carnage that was once his command and
  507.     begins to keen, collapsing to his knees.
  508.  
  509.                 GENERAL OWEN
  510.         Oh God...! My soldiers...! All of my
  511.         boys and girls...!
  512.  
  513.     The Roughnecks are shocked. They've never seen a general break down before.
  514.     Lieutenant Rasczak slaps Owen hard.
  515.  
  516.                 LT. RASCZAK
  517.         Shut up ! Your soldier's dead and
  518.         you're not !
  519.  
  520.                 GENERAL OWEN
  521.         I know... I wish you'd shoot me...
  522.  
  523.                 LT. RASCZAK
  524.         I oughta !
  525.  
  526.     And it looks like Rasczak just might, but just then Ace touches down
  527.     next to Johnny and Rasczak.
  528.  
  529.                 ACE
  530.         Lieutenant, we got trouble !
  531.  
  532. 144    EXT    RAMPARTS - DAY - RASCZAK
  533.  
  534.     and Johnny join other stunned Roughnecks to see THOUSANDS OF BUGS on
  535.     the march from every direction. Bug batteries open up in the distance.
  536.  
  537.                 RASCZAK
  538.         Warm it all up ! Everything you got !
  539.         Levy, collect the big guns from the 
  540.         towers. Watkins, put General Owen 
  541.         with the wounded. Rico, where's my 
  542.         communications ?
  543.  
  544.                 JOHNNY
  545.         What's going on, Diz ?
  546.  
  547.                 DIZZY (O.S.)
  548.         I got power ! Gimme a minute !
  549.  
  550.     Johnny runs for the communications room.
  551.  
  552.                 JOHNNY
  553.         We don't have a minute !
  554.  
  555. 145    INT    COMMUNICATIONS - DAY - DIZZY
  556.  
  557.     has the board up. Outside the battle has begun. Nukes go WOMP ! and
  558.     pulse guns chatter.
  559.  
  560.                 DIZZY
  561.             What frequency ?
  562.  
  563.                 JOHNNY
  564.             All bands.
  565.  
  566.                 DIZZY
  567.             Roughneck patrol to battle group...
  568.             Roughneck patrol to battle group...

  570.                 RODGER YOUNG (O.S.)
  571.             This is Rodger Young... What's going
  572.             on down there ? We're taking plasma !
  573.             We have Orion P-11 as clear !
  574.  
  575.                 JOHNNY
  576.             SHUT UP, SIR ! We need pick up now !
  577.  
  578.                 RODGER YOUNG (O.S.)
  579.             What is your position ?
  580.  
  581.                 JOHNNY
  582.             Landing zone is extremely hostile.
  583.             Come down on this transmission !
  584.  
  585.                 RODGER YOUNG (O.S.)
  586.             Inside 4th brigade compound ?
  587.             That's crazy !
  588.  
  589.                 JOHNNY
  590.             Then I hope you have a crazy 
  591.             pilot ! Keep the line open, Dizzy !

  593.     Johnny races out the door.
  594.  
  595. 146    EXT    4TH BRIGADE HQ - DAY - THE COMPOUND

  597.     is white hot as Roughnecks on the walls unload nukes. Johnny crosses 
  598.     the compound, lands next to Rasczak on the wall.
  599.  
  600.                 JOHNNY
  601.         Boat coming down, sir !
  602.  
  603.     The Roughnecks stop firing as they run out of nukes.
  604.  
  605.                 ROUGHNECKS
  606.         I'm empty...all nuked out... Me, too !
  607.  
  608.     Johnny scans the battlefield. Nukes have turned the surface into dark glass.
  609.     Now, out of the smoke, come the bugs, steaming glass cracking beneath 
  610.     millions of marching feet.
  611.  
  612.                 ACE
  613.         Jeez, we musta killed a million already...!
  614.  
  615.                 JOHNNY
  616.         Not enough, I guess.
  617.  
  618.     Sugar Watkins sees Genera Owen in the compound below,
  619.     stumbling aimlessly among his dead soldiers.
  620.  
  621.                 SUGAR WATKINS
  622.         General ! GENERAL, stay with the wounded...
  623.         Sir, the general...!
  624.  
  625.                 RASCZAK
  626.         Ah, the hell with him...
  627.  
  628.     Hoppers sweep into the compound. The Roughnecks open fire. General Owen
  629.     make easy pickings for ones that get through.
  630.  
  631.                 RASCZAK
  632.         Fall back... form a circle ! If no 
  633.         living bug comes over that wall,
  634.         we cannot be harmed.
  635.  
  636.     Dizzy arrives on thr bounce as the Roughnecks fall back into the compound.
  637.     Bugs pile in over the walls. The circle affords them 360 degrees of kill zone.
  638.  
  639.                 RASCZAK
  640.         Rico, Flores, Watkins, Levy ! We 
  641.         control the sky until retrieval !
  642.  
  643.                 JOHNNY ET AL
  644.         Yes, sir !
  645.  
  646.     Rasczak, Sugar Watkins, Johnny and Dizzy stand back-to-back in the center
  647.     of the circle, sweeping the skies with the heavy guns from the towers.
  648.     Hoppers are blown to pieces.
  649.  
  650.                 ACE
  651.         Getting low here, sir !
  652.  
  653.                 DIZZY
  654.         300 rounds and counting, sir !
  655.  
  656.                 RASCZAK
  657.         Make every shot count !
  658.  
  659.     Johnny looks up. A RETRIEVAL BOAT hurtles down through bursts of 
  660.     bug plasma, takes a grazing hit, rights itself with retros and lands within 
  661.     the circle. Roughnecks cheer, saved !
  662.  
  663.                 RASCZAK
  664.         Sergeant, secure the boat !
  665.  
  666.                 JOHNNY
  667.         Yes, sir !
  668.  
  669.     Roughnecks move to protect the boat. The hatch blows open.
  670.  
  671.                 RASCZAK
  672.         Board the wounded !
  673.  
  674.     Dead bugs ring the compound walls, forming ramps for living insect
  675.     soldiers to enter the compound in greater numbers.
  676.  
  677.                 RASCZAK
  678.         Move to retrieval on my command !
  679.         First group, now...!
  680.  
  681.     The circle shrinks as Roughnecks fall back and board the boat.
  682.     More and more bugs pile in over the compound walls.
  683.  
  684.                 RASCZAK
  685.         Alright, Flores ! Levy ! Rico...!
  686.  
  687.     Suddenly, the ground collapses under Rasczak. He falls in to his waist,
  688.     vomits blood as something chews on him from below.
  689.  
  690.                 RASCZAK
  691.         AAAAAAAAAAAA !
  692.  
  693.                 JOHNNY
  694.         Cover us, Ace !
  695.  
  696.     Ace and the others fire from the boat. Johnny and Dizzy fire at the ground
  697.     around Rasczak. Rasczak stops screaming. They try to pull him free.
  698.  
  699.                 JOHNNY
  700.         Hit your jets, sir !
